Neoophorus regalis
Hi friends:
A species of Goodeids is vanishing at that momentr, silent and unnoticed by all, even us:
The last surveys revealed, that only 1 little unnamed creek in the vicintiy of Los Reyes is bearing Neoophorus regalis, the other 3 historically mentioned ones seem to have lost this species. Regalis is uncommon there, the collection trip from Roman Slaboch and his team found only one but pregnant female afew weeks ago, but the species has been uncommon throughout the last decade, and may vanish there quite soon. It is endangered by sugar cane production and the growing city, the need of water for the plants... Of course, regalis is no coloured Characodon, no yellow francesae and no striking coloured tequila-Splitfin, no popular species, and no species to win exhibitions, but we have the DUTY, as part of this destroying manhood to do everything to keep this species alive!
So plesae, if anybody has remnant stocks of this fish at home, please tell us about. It might really be, that this female has been the last in the wild!!
So, to scare you all a bit: the ranking of rare Goodeids:
1. Allodontichthys polylepis; no wild stocks, captive stocks around 20-30 specimens from 2 of the historically 3 known localities
2. Allotoca meeki: probably no more wild stocks; captive stocks unknown, but all from 1 locality, Opopeo; I heard of around 10 specimens in Mexico, I have 16 including fry, Tversted in Denmark still some? I heard of rumors, he is giving away his fish? That's all?
3. Neoophorus regalis: hopefully one small wild stock; no(?) captive stocks
What do you think is the "winner"? None of them...
Mike
