3rd International GWG-Meeting

Mind the date!

Just a brief information in advance, to give you the possibility to plan your Meetings: The 3rd International Meeting of the Goodeid Working Group will take place this year in Vienna, Austria. The time range will be either in one of the last two weeks in September of the first week of October. In all cases, I will keep you update.

My best wishes,

Mike

Hi Friends, I have fixed the date today: The event will take place from the 28.09 to the 30.09.2012, with the possibility to have more frame programm on the 01.10. The first speech is fixed, too: Juan Miguel Artigas-Azas will talk about Rio Panuco habitats of Goodeids and desert habitats of Xenoophorus, means habitats in the eastern range of Goodeid distribution.

My best wishes and a happy easter,

Mike

@ the meeting, meanwhile a second speaker is fixed: Shawn Goodchild from the North Dakota State University will talk about the genera Crenichthys and Empetrichthys, the 3rd and last speech is still vacant. As soon as we I have fixed the schedule (the coming week) I will announce it and start inviting people.

The 3rd speaker is Diushi Ker'i Corona Santiago from the university of Morelia. He will talk about the genera Allotoca and Neoophorus, genera, often overlooked and rarely kept except dugesii, and absolutely rare in the wild. E.g., Allotoca meeki is kept only by very few aquarists in few numbers, a 10 of this species in Morelia any maybe still a few in the Lago de Opopeo. Allotoca maculata is one of the rarest Goodeid species and Neoophorus is the most mystique Goodeid, even more than the genus Hubbsina.

Here is the preliminary schedule of the 3rd International Meeting

Sorry for correcting the schedule so fast, but I had not been aware, that there is a small timeframe between summer field work and autumn field work of John Lyons, and luckily, this timeframe is when our meeting is held in September; additionally - and this is for me a sign of recognition of our group - he is more than pleased to come to our meeting and talk about conservation status and trends for mexican Goodeid species.

So I hope, you don't mind, when I add Mr. John Lyons as 4th speaker to our meeting, postponing fish exchanges and talks in the evening, when we have our dinner in the lounge.

I added a list of proposed accomodations to our site: Here is the link: http://www.goodeidworkinggroup.com/accomodations

It is rather unfortunate that the Goodeid Working Group meeting overlaps with the EAZA annual conference. I guess there is nothing that can be done about that now. Of the meeting would have been one day later, or if saturday's and sunday's programm would be switched, I could have attended. Like this, it looks like I have to miss it once more :-(

Damned! Is there really no weekend in fall without any important meeting??? And the strange and sarcastic thing is, the EAZA meeting is also in Austria, but Innsbruck is simply too far away...

Sometimes I think, it would be better to do it summer. Everyone could book a holiday for some days and we could  elongate the event to 4 or 5 days, and no other meetings...

Unfortunately we can't change many things, Paul. As most of the participants need to go home on Sunday and to work on Monday, we can't change the days ( and I had to book restaurants aso already) and 1 day later means the same troubles.

Sh.. situation, really. I am sorry for not having you at the meeting as I am really curious about meeting you personally for a long time now, and I hoped to meet you finally here in Vienna due to the venue is quite close to your home:-(

Next year might be more difficult to come as the chances are big to have it in the USA, probably near Michigan.

Mike

We have some internal discussion at the ZOO about who will go where and when. Maybe I'll come after all, I'll probably know next week.Btw: your scheltopusik has layed a clutch of poor quality eggs. We are working on a new and hopefully better terrarium, hope that we will have a better chance for breeding next year!

Hi Paul, any news???

Bad luck with the Scheltopusik, but I think, she is in the best age to give you a lot of young the next years:-)

By the way (for all): Kyle Piller will come and give us a short bonus-talk about new phylogenetic results in Goodeid research.

Mike

Yeah, the news is that I will come to the GWG meeting and a collegue will go to EAZA :-)

I wonder: do you know the guys behind http://www.steinzeit-design.at/  ? It looks to me like they make pretty cool backgrounds for reasonable prices. I noted that they are located near Vienna. Would it be an idea to invite them to present their products in one of the lunchbreaks? Maybe ask them to sponsor the GWG in some way as well? I would be happy to buy 2 backgrounds for them (privately) maybe more (have to discuss at the ZOO) ...

Yeah, thats very good news:-)))

No, I don't know them. We have our home-company, www.megastone.at, the only one we cooperate with since decades. But never mind: I will ask them to come for a short presentation, but if not: I don't know about your schedule, but on Monday, when we go to the lake, we drive very close by, a few hundred meters. I am sure we will find time to pay a visit to the company and talk to them.

Cheers, Mike

Attention: Schedule had to be modified due Kyle Piller would like to give a talk about new scientific results about Goodeid phylogeny!!!

@Paul: Sorry about the backgrounds: I phoned them, and they repeatedly refered me to their webshop and seemed to be not really interested to come for a presentation, but will think it over. I didn't urge them as in reality schedule on Saturday leaves not much place for their product-presentation. Best will be to go there directly on Monday morning and select your backgrounds (I saw, they have plenty of different models in their shop). We will have a small bus so transport is no problem.
