Glazer Germany

Hi All My local fish shop has Allotoca dugesii Girardinichthys viviparus Skiffia francesae Skiffia multipunctata Xenoophorus captivus Xenotoca variata xenotoca melanosoma Does anyone know who is supplying them to Glazer and what locations they are from? It is hard enough keeping track of known locations without the risk from commercial strains Am I wrong to be concerned? Nigel

Well, I will try to get the info, but my experience with Glaser is: they won't reply
I bought goodeids (Xenoophorus, Characodon) from a big saler in Germany (Tropicwater), he got them from Uwe Dost, but they are friends as far as I know, and I got location data. The things, I am concerned about: We are trying to breed endangered fish and distribute them among goodeid-lovers to keep strains alive, and other - as it looks like - good breeders of rare species and known persons (well, you can't hide such species and quantities from friends and colleagues) - sell them simply to shops without thinking...and strain info gets lost, you are right, Nigel, we have to be concerned!
I tried to get Goodeid-photos from Glaser and sent them a mail a couple of weeks ago...no reply.
My wish to all Gooedeid breeders: Stop selling Goodeids to shops!

Still, the Goodeids in shops
Still, the Goodeids in shops are what makes more aquarist interested in these fish than all articles together ... Only after seeing them in a shop, most start to surf the internet for information ...

Hi Paul,
principally you are right, of course, and when I wrote last time not to sell Goodeids in petshops or wholesalers, I thought in the first row of rare species, as that had been nearly all of the species, Nigel mentioned. I have no problem with species that are in good stocks, as I saw today Ilyodon furcidens, Ameca splendens and Chapalichthys pardalis offered by the wholesaler www.tropicwater.eu. The problem I see, that on the one hand people in our group are trying to find the (rare) stocks of Xenotoca melanosoma (Nigel Hunter) in the hobby, and on the other hand, one of the breeders is selling his looked-for fish unmentioned to the hobby. And to be honest: Xenotoca melanosoma is not a fish, people are looking for except specialists. This I think, is waste of ressources, and might be one way to get this species lost in the hobby. What I would like to have, is that people with rare species - not only Goodeids - try first to distribute them among specialists before they "flog" them to petshops. Therefore, these species are to deep in threat, I mean.

Within EAZA Amsterdam ZOO set
Within EAZA Amsterdam ZOO set an example: they offer their surplus animals first to fellow ZOO's for 3 months. Then, if no other ZOO is interested, and depending on the species, some common species are offered to others/sold.I think that we could do the same and set up a surplus-list. Nobody interested = fish can go to wherever. Basically the same idea you have. I think that 3 months is a reasonable timespan to wait for reactions, of course it leaves everyone free to negociate that fish are kept for longer (for instance untill the next meeting).I think that it would even be better if a note could be added which species are highest priority for breeding, so that they really stand out in such a surplus-list.
Good idea, Paul! Could be
Good idea, Paul!
Could be really a good way... e.g. Chapalichthys pardalis is rare in the wild - I mean at Tocumbo - but captive stocks may be thousands, so it is no problem to sell them to shops, I think, but offering them in a sales corner for a certain time, and therafter sell it to who-ever (and then please take them out of the list again) might be very good solution.
Thanks, Paul! Might be a job for you, haha, running such a sales corner, I mean:-)))
P.S: For the highest priority list, we still(after too many months!!!) need the captive-stock list from some coordinators. Nigel is very keen in collecting them, but some are very lazy, and he is sacrifyzing a lot of time for this...
